Judy Palatinga

Ever wish you could double your salary?

Judy is currently the medical records manager at a long-term care facility in her hometown of Michigan City, Indiana. But with her new bachelor’s degree in hand, she is now eligible to take the state and federal tests to become a licensed administrator in the long-term care field. Judy has completed her 6-month internship and passed her federal licensing test. She is scheduled to take her state licensing test on March 16, 2010.

That promotion should double her salary given the going rate for long-term care administrators. “I’ve worked in long-term care for almost 25 years, so that’s pretty much all I know,” says Judy, who had not been in school for 25 years before enrolling at Kaplan University. “But I needed a bachelor’s degree to get an administrator’s license.”

Judy performs a balancing act

Judy not only completed her bachelor’s degree, she did so while maintaining a near-perfect grade point average. She says she chose Kaplan University for the scheduling flexibility and the ability to transfer credits from certificate programs she had already completed.

In addition to studying and working full-time, Judy has two children, ages 16 and 12. “It was pretty hard juggling family, work, and school, but I made it through,” she says. Her kids, in fact, seem to be following in her academic footsteps. “My 16-year-old has a 4.0 average, so she even beat me by a little bit.”

How would she rate her experience at Kaplan University? “It worked out very well for me,” she says. “The instructors were always willing to help, and being in a virtual classroom was almost like being in a real one. I’d recommend it to anyone.”
